A minimum of thirteen people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
