Multiple Affected as Turbulence Hits A Delta Airlines Flight into Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals sustained injuries after a Delta flight from LA to Sydney, Australia encountered rough air this past Friday.

The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services reported they assessed a total of five people, and took a trio to hospital with minor injuries that included pain in the back and headaches. Those affected ranged from their 30s to 70s.

It is the newest example of commercial jets experiencing severe turbulence, with aviation specialists pointing out that climate change is a key driver.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the wide-body jet, the official added, stating that the plane arrived "safely and normally" at the airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on the day in question.

Emergency responders indicated they received a call just three minutes before the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

Why plane turbulence is becoming increasingly prevalent - and often stronger.

During the past year, two dozen individuals were hurt when another Delta jet, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "severe" atmospheric disturbance just 120 minutes into the lengthy trip, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

In-flight turbulence is fairly routine during flights, and while instances of strong or severe turbulence appear to be increasing, they are statistically infrequent.

Research indicates that there are around five thousand cases of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a total of more than 35 million aircraft departures that now take off around the world.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the vertical motions of a plane going through disturbed air generate in excess of 1.5g-force on your body - enough to lift you out of your seat if you did not have on a seatbelt.

As a changing climate shifts the conditions in the sky, experts warn that flying could become less smooth: warming trends and changing jet streams in the higher altitudes are likely to increase the occurrence and strength of severe turbulence.
