"When are you chatting with the band?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of high-profile fans have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to make music."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album was born from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness demanded a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

However Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
